A recent study highlights the effectiveness of virtual reality (VR) education in enhancing the safety knowledge, awareness, and behaviors of hospitalized children, significantly reducing safety incidents in pediatric wards.
A groundbreaking study conducted in South Korea and published in theJournal of Pediatric Nursingreveals that VR-based educational programs can drastically improve safety outcomes for hospitalized children aged 4 to 6. The quasi-experimental research compared a group of children who received VR safety training with those receiving standard hospital education.
Researchers emphasized that VR’s immersive and engaging nature makes it a superior alternative to traditional methods like oral or paper-based instructions. The study demonstrates the potential of VR to prevent incidents like falls, burns, and equipment-related injuries in pediatric wards, ultimately improving the quality of life and safety for young patients.
The results showed remarkable improvements among the VR-trained group, with a 1.48-point increase in safety knowledge, a 0.49-point rise in safety awareness, and a 0.53-point enhancement in safety behaviors. The program utilized interactive simulations of hospital scenarios, enabling children to practice safety measures, such as raising bed rails, under the guidance of a virtual character.
